Down Carding Mill Valley

Welcome to the official Church Stretton Town Council website

The historic market town of Church Stretton is situated in the heart of the South Shropshire hills on the English/Welsh borders. This part of the Marches is still relatively undiscovered and Church Stretton is the only town in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is an area renowned worldwide for its geology, with some of the oldest rock formations in existence.

Church Stretton LogoChurch Stretton with its picturesque surrounding villages forms an excellent base for the country lover or sportsman alike, in all seasons. Cross-country routes are well marked for hikers, horse riders, mountain bikes, and naturalists. The Long Mynd, which rises above the west of the town, is renowned for gliding, hang gliding and paragliding, and boasts the second highest golf course in England. The beautiful countryside, with its wild uplands and breathtaking views, features prominently in the books of Mary Webb, A E Housman, and Malcolm Saville.

Situated midway between Shrewsbury and Ludlow, Church Stretton is also a convenient centre from which to visit several historic towns, castles, museums and sites of interest, within a 15 mile radius through beautiful countryside. The area offers an excellent range of accommodation, restaurants (some Michelin starred), pubs and shops.

Church Stretton is easily accessible via the A49 trunk road and main line Manchester to Cardiff railway, linking to local shuttle bus services. Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool airports are all within two hours travelling.

There is something for tourists and visitors of all ages and interests, with a year round programme of festivals and events.
