Hope Bowdler Hill and Gaerstone Walk   Print  E-mail

Distance 3.5 miles
Time 2 - 2.5 hours
Map Ordnance Survey Explorer 217
Difficulty One fairly steep climb at the start and a short sharp downhill part at point 4.

A walk starting from the centre of Hope Bowdler and heading up on to the high ground overlooking the village. With superb views across the whole of the area.

  1. Start from the centre of Hope Bowdler and walk eastwards towards Much Wenlock on the B4371. About 30m past the last house in Hope Bowdler take the signposted bridleway on the left. Climb steadily up hill passing through several gates.
  2. The path eventually flattens out and crosses the high moorland. Listen for and try and spot the many skylarks. Cross a small stream and follow the wide path through the bracken. The path curves to the left with good views of Cardington on your right and Caer Caradoc and The Lawley ahead.
  3. At a junction of several paths there is a stile on the right which leads to Willstone. However, turn left and head up hill to the top of the ridge. The ridge offers excellent views in all directions with Church Stretton and the Long Mynd to the west, Caer Caradoc, The Lawley and The Wrekin to the north and north-west and Wenlock Edge and the Clee Hills visible to the south-east.
  4. Follow the ridge along to the Gaerstone rock at the end. Just beyond the Gaerstone is a stile. Do not pass over but turn right and head down the hillside keeping to the edge of the field to a small gate. Pass through this and continue to the lane. Turn left and walk to the end of the lane to the junction with the B4371.
  5. Turn left and walk a few metres to the layby. Climb over the stile at the layby and follow the path back over several stiles to Hope Bowdler village.
  6. At the end of the path turn right to join the B4371 and return back to your starting point. On your way back, don't forget to visit the parish church. The church is located down a gravel track off the B4371, the start of which is marked by the red postbox.

An alternative starting point would be the small layby near point 5.
